Who is in Charge of the United States at this Moment?

Joe Biden in sunglasses pointing
It certainly isn't this guy.

Thee Optimist believes that the Biden administration is the worst presidential administration of his adult lifetime, and may in fact be the worst ever.

Yes, he knows that James Buchanan is often considered by historians to be the worst president.

Thee Optimist even voted for Biden four years ago.  But he has his reasons for this Biden assessment.

Why not list a few of them here?

- The Biden administration egregiously botched the response to Covid in the United States, leading to more than 800,000 deaths since Biden took office, the highest total in the world during that period.

Bear in mind that the vaccines already existed before Biden came on board.  Gasp!  They were developed at Warp Speed during Reign of Terror #1 of the Covid-denier Donald Trump.

At the tail end of the Biden wreckage, nearly 100 people still die from Covid in the United States every day (yes, in November 2024), and the real number is higher because only 39 states still bother to report their numbers.

- The Biden administration armed, paid for, encouraged, and gave diplomatic cover to the Israeli genocide in Palestine.  To Thee Optimist, this is either the worst or second worst aspect of the Biden administration, depending on how events play out in the coming weeks.

This is because:

- Whoever is running the Biden administration is recklessly attempting to start World War III with Russia, the country with the world's largest nuclear arsenal.

They are doing this despite the fact that with only two months in his term, Biden is the lamest of all possible lame ducks.

They are also doing it despite the fact that the man who just won the presidency, and did so resoundingly, has made ending the war between Ukraine and Russia one of his priorities.

It appears that whoever is running the Biden administration, is hell bent on thwarting the will of the American people, and causing an even worse disaster in Ukraine than the one that already exists.

But who is actually running the Biden administration?

Joe Biden is 82 years old.  Recent appearances make it clear that his mind is failing, and that he is, in all likelihood, no longer participating in governance.

The Man Without a Brain

Back in July, the Democrats did an unprecedented thing.

They mounted a high-pressure campaign to get their candidate for president, a man who was in fact the incumbent, to step down from the race.

Throughout American history, presidential incumbents have won roughly 75% of the time.  Regardless, the Dems deserted their man less than four months before Election Day.

For this bullying campaign, they marshalled not only their leadership in the Senate and House of Representatives, not only media friendly to them such as the New York Times, the Washington Post and CNN, but bizarrely, celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney.

During this ultimately successful effort, they made it clear that Biden's age, inability to speak in an articulate manner, and confused thinking, meant he was not a viable candidate.

The problem with this message is that being the president is harder, and requires a great deal more awareness and cognitive ability, than running for president.

Pointing out that Biden was too old and senile to run for president was a tacit admission that he was too old and senile to perform the duties of president.

And yet, no one removed him from office.

As time has worn on, it's become ever more clear that his mind is failing, he is no more than a figurehead, and he is barely hanging on

He is not running the show.

Kamala Harris intellectual lightweight
Is Kamala Harris the acting president?  Almost certainly not.

The Empty Suit

As everyone knows by now, once they had gotten rid of Biden, the Democrats simply inserted vice president Kamala Harris as the new candidate for president.

They did this despite the fact that Harris hadn't received a single vote from anyone in any primary race, not just during 2024, but also during her abortive run for the presidential nomination in 2020.

As many vice presidents do, Harris spent most of her term largely out of the public eye.

Once she emerged into the limelight, it became clear that she is an intellectual lightweight with little grasp of policy making.  Through much of her campaign, she didn't seem to have a stated opinion on anything.

Her campaign theme became the lighter than air, incredibly absurd (given the somewhat alarming state of both the US and the world), "politics of joy."

Commentators on both the right, and the left, began to notice that she was badly out of her depth and unfit to be president.

As a practical matter, since she lost the election, she has mostly disappeared again, choosing to end her term much the same as she spent it - away from the public, and away from the levers of power.

At this moment, she's in Hawaii.

Aftermath of Russian medium-range ballistic missile attack on Ukraine.  The Russians launched an experimental hypersonic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead as an escalation response to recent American actions.

Very Bad Things

During the past few days, the Biden administration has granted Ukraine the right to send our missiles deep into Russia, along with giving the Ukrainians landmines (of all things).

Russia has responded by launching a medium range ballistic missile that could carry a nuclear warhead.

At the same time, our pet mad dog Netanyahu has just been indicted by the International Criminal Court, and a warrant has been issued for his, and his former defense minister's arrest.

This is a black eye for the United States, to put it mildly.

These things are happening while Harris is on vacay, and Biden is out to lunch.

So who, exactly, is running the country?

Words of Wisdom

"The governor and I, we were all doing a tour of the library here and talking about the significance of the passage of time, right, the significance of the passage of time. So, when you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time in terms of what we need to do to lay these wires. What we need to do to create these jobs. And there is such great significance to the passage of time when we think about a day in the life of our children."

- Kamala Harris (on the significance of the passage of time)
