The Jewish Queen of Butt-Selfies

Jen Selter, the newly crowned "Jewish Queen of Butt-Selfies."

You probably don't know this, but Thee Optimist is a long-time friend of the Jewish people and faith, as well as a former resident of Brooklyn.

As such, I was intrigued by last weekend's murder of Brooklyn real estate developer Menachem Stark, and the controversy around the "Who Didn't Want Him Dead?" coverage of it by the New York Post.

So I was following the discussion and debate among Jewish people about the life and death of a man who was simultaneously considered a "pillar of his community," a "slumlord," and even a "scumbag."

But as I was reading an online magazine called The Jewish Daily Forward, this clickable headline jumped out at me:

Jen Selter, Jewish Queen of Butt-Selfies

Kind of hard to resist, no?  Well, for me it was impossible.

The link took me an article about a young woman, 20-year-old Jen Selter of Roslyn, New York, a well-to-do Long Island suburb, who is attempting to make a career out of posting online photographs of her ass.

Besides the Jewish Queen of Butt-Selfies, Jen is also known as "The Best Butt on Instagram," "Dat Ass,"and numerous other fun nicknames.  She has more than 1.3 million Instagram followers, and her self-administered butt shots can each get more than 70,000 "Likes."

What else did I learn about Jen?  Well, she's had a nose job, and she used to work in a plastic surgeon's office.  This closeness to cosmetic surgery has led many followers to suspect that her most valuable asset is surgically enhanced.

 What else?

She takes many more shots of her ass than her face, because she believes her followers don't care about her face.  She owns 150 pairs of yoga pants.  And she has dropped out of cosmetology school in order to better focus her efforts on taking photographs of her own ass.

Which seems like a good idea because... I'm not really sure why.  I guess because cosmetology will always be there, but gravity's gonna catch up to that ass sooner or later.  You've got to strike while the iron is hot.

Even so, not every commenter on the Jewish Daily Forward is a fan of Jen:

"There are plenty of pretty Jewish women out there. I don't see why this one is doing anything notable."

"What is the saying?  If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, then what am I?  Is selfie a good thing?"

"One can only hope Ms. Selter's Contribution to society will be more than a curvy butt."

Regardless of what the haters and the hand-wringers say, Jen's mom is supportive of her career choice.  “I’m very proud of her because this is a girl who didn’t want to go to college,” she says.

No, I don't know what that means, either.

At this juncture, I could say something about how Jen takes the whole shallowness and narcissism of the Selfie Movement to its logical endpoint.  Or how when I was her age, we were into meaningful things like the Sex Pistols.  But I won't bother.

Here.  Take another look (this time with the face included):
